A visit to Largs...
..and a brisk walk, leisurely stroll or cycle, along the banks of the River Clyde, on our beautiful seaside promenade with lovely unspoilt views towards the islands of Cumbrae, Bute, and Arran. There are plenty of colourful benches to rest on and take in the wonderful scenery.
The prom runs the full length of Largs, giving access to:- two play parks, two putting greens, a boating pond, the Vikingar! Centre (swimming pool, soft play, gym, theatre & Viking Exhibition Centre), several ice cream kiosks, skateboard park, large outdoor playpark for small children, the Pencil monument (commemorating the Battle of Largs against the invading Vikings in 1263) and finally, the Largs Yacht Haven/Marina (cafe, restaurant & shops)
For the sports enthusiast there are two golf courses, 3 bowling greens, an indoor tenpin bowling alley, hill walking, cycling, skateboarding, swimming, gym, sailing, windsurfing, diving, fresh water & sea angling, and horse riding. Inverclyde International Sports Centre for indoor activities.
Kelburn Country Centre, just outside Largs is a great day out for the whole family. Fabulous walks, breathtaking views, adventure playground and the famous Secret Forest. Kelburn Castle is the current home of Lord Glasgow and with its beautifully maintained gardens and some of the oldest trees in Britain is worth a visit.
The island of Cumbrae is a 10 min ferry trip and offers safe cycling for the whole family and boasts a Country & Western Festival. Wee Cumbrae (the tiny island adjacent to Cumbrae) can be reached by a power boat ride, taking in the amazing wildlife in and around the River Clyde. The larger islands of Arran & Bute are also well worth visiting.
Other famous places to visit are Glasgow, Ayr (taking in the Robert Burns country tour and the Whiskey trail), Loch Lomond, Edinburgh, and Stirling - all no more than 1½ hours drive away.
Largs is a great base to tour Scotland and many more places can be visited within a day’s trip.
Don’t forget to experience a scenic sail on the historic paddle steamer the PS Waverley, the world’s last ocean going paddle steamer.
